Mission Statement

Mission - It is the mission of our department to offer a quality English program while simultaneously providing support and a collaborative learning environment in which students can expand their intellectual and cultural horizons, realize their creative potential, and acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to help them build successful careers and make meaningful contributions to the world around them.

Goals - 1) to provide students with reading strategies, critical thinking tools, principles of composition and editing skills and 2) to strengthen their abilities to view the world through keen and sensitive eyes as they learn to appreciate and understand the rich diversity of the world’s literary and cultural landscape

Departmental Standards for Admission to the English Major

A student who intends to major in English must earn at least two B’s and a C in the three required communication courses - English 131, English 132, and COMM 201, Communication Skills, by the end of the sophomore year. The minimum overall grade point average for students to be admitted into the English major is 2.0. The requirements to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in English is on the next page.

Requirements for a Minor in English

Students may receive a minor in English by completing any six English courses provided that those courses are not requirements for some other aspect of their studies (see Declaring a Minor).
